Why returns decide your Meesho profit

With no commission, the biggest swing in Meesho profit is how many orders stay delivered. A customer return costs you the return shipping fee, the packaging and sometimes the product. An RTO carries no shipping charge, but the packaging is gone and the stock is tied up until it comes back. All of it has to be paid for by the orders that are delivered.

Take the example product. Out of 100 orders shipped, 75 are delivered, 18 are returned and 7 go RTO. With no returns each order would make ₹141.66. Once returns and RTO are counted, each delivered order makes ₹108.89. The product stays profitable until returns reach 48.8%.

    Selling on Meesho without GST

Meesho lets you sign up without a GSTIN. Sellers without one can sell only within their own state, under the GST rules for suppliers who sell through e-commerce platforms without registration. Two things change in the numbers. You do not charge GST, so the full price is your sale value. And you cannot claim back the 18% GST on Meesho’s shipping and return charges, so those cost you 18% more. No GST TCS is collected on these sales, but the 0.1% income tax TDS still applies.

    When Meesho pays you

Meesho pays on a 7-day cycle from delivery, for prepaid and cash on delivery orders alike, straight to your bank account. For a GST-registered seller, 0.5% GST TCS and 0.1% TDS under section 194-O are held back from the payout. You claim TCS against your GST liability and TDS in your income tax return, so both reduce the cash you receive without being a cost.

Worked example: a ₹449 kurti on Meesho

A kurti priced at ₹449 including 5% GST, costing ₹185 to make, with an example shipping charge of ₹68 and a return shipping fee of ₹90. 18% of orders are returned, 7% go RTO and 10% of those can’t be sold again. Ads run at 4% of the price.

    Per delivered orderAmount
    Selling price₹449.00
    GST collected (5%)−₹21.38
    Commission₹0.00
    Meesho shipping charge−₹68.00
Return shipping fees, spread over delivered orders−₹21.60
    Stock lost to damaged returns−₹6.17
    Product cost−₹185.00
Packaging and other, incl. undelivered orders−₹20.00
    Meesho Ads (4%)−₹17.96
Profit per delivered order₹108.89 (24.25% margin)

GST on Meesho’s shipping and return charges is claimable for a registered seller, so it is not counted as a cost.

How to bring Meesho returns down

    • Put real garment measurements in the size chart, not just S, M and L.
    • Use photos that show the true colour, fabric and fit, including a close-up of the fabric.
    • Write titles and descriptions that match the product exactly. Overpromising leads to “not as described” returns.
    • Check every piece for defects before packing, and pack it so it survives the courier.
    • Review your returns in the Supplier Panel every week and fix the listing behind the most common complaint.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Meesho charge commission from sellers?

No. Meesho charges 0% commission in every category, with no registration fee and no collection fee on prepaid or cash on delivery orders. Sellers pay a shipping charge on each order with 18% GST on top, and a return shipping fee when a customer returns a product.

What does Meesho deduct from a seller’s payment?

Meesho deducts the shipping charge and 18% GST on it from each delivered order, and a return shipping fee on orders customers return. For GST-registered sellers it also holds back 0.5% GST TCS and 0.1% income tax TDS under section 194-O, which you can claim back.

Does Meesho charge for RTO orders?

No. If an order is not delivered and comes back to you as an RTO (return to origin), Meesho does not charge a return shipping fee. You still lose the packaging, and any stock damaged on the way back.

How much is the Meesho return shipping fee?

Meesho sets the return shipping fee by the weight of the shipment and shows it in the product details in the Supplier Panel. It applies only when a customer returns a delivered order, and Meesho says it can waive the fee in some exceptional cases.

    When does Meesho pay sellers?

Meesho pays on a 7-day payment cycle from order delivery, including cash on delivery orders. The money goes straight to your bank account, and the Supplier Panel shows paid and upcoming amounts.

Can I sell on Meesho without a GST number?

Yes. Meesho accepts sellers without a GSTIN, who can sell only within their own state. You do not charge GST and no GST TCS is collected, but you cannot claim back the 18% GST on Meesho’s shipping and return charges, so they cost you more.

Does Meesho charge a penalty for cancelling orders?

No. Meesho charges no penalty for supplier cancellations or auto cancellations, for example when you run out of stock. Frequent cancellations still hurt the customer experience, so keep inventory in the Supplier Panel accurate.

How do I calculate profit on Meesho?

Take the selling price minus GST, then subtract the Meesho shipping charge, product cost, packaging and ads. Then spread the return shipping fees, lost stock and packaging from returned and RTO orders over the orders that were delivered. The result is your real profit per delivered order, which this calculator works out for you.
